It sounds hokey but I’ve been looking for something like this for years. I’d hoped in a previous project to eventually make the business model B2C2B but didn’t have the playbook (or language ) to properly communicate it.
I agree there is an overuse of the word community and its kind of losing its meaning. One piece of it is its now used as a GTM strategy or alternative to audience building depending on the context.
I recently realised 'community' itself is a people (or culture) while the platforms (Circle, Slack) are just that platforms. If the platforms didn't exist, the community would stlll be there just less centralised.
YES!!!! That is what I was trying to show in this post! (Although I do advocate for piping all that data into one place... if you have to show some metrics...) :)
The metrics piece is something I'm realising lately. I'm right now in a few whatsapp communities where data tracking is not really accessible but I guess with Slack and Circle this is doable
Yea, I've used common room but there are multiple tools that do this now where you can pipe it in with APIs and have one singular view of a person including a lot of social platforms, uploading spreadsheets, etc. But you're right -- you'll never get em all!
This was such an interesting read! I'll admit as someone who is on the eng side of things, i kinda see PMs and marketing people as aliens, who do weird magic that totally doesn't fit into a dashboard or rational frameworks.
It's fascinating to see the amount of tracking you've done (even though i heed your advice not to do it), and your diagrams were super clear in demystifying all that work!
This is fantastic!

Can’t wait to read the next one
I'm glad! And I agree, this took me a long time to sift through too -- it is hard to simplify
Love how clear and easy this is to follow... thank you for distilling such a fuzzy initiative into something so concrete.
Yay, that was my goal :)
Currently in the "skip the dashboards" phase...can't wait for part 3!

Thanks Rose!! I thought about that too. I wrote a whole post about metrics then told people not to spend too much time on metrics.... oops :)
